A Thanksgiving Message..

Hi Gang, and Happy Thanksgiving to you ALL..

I Just wanted to pop-in right before your holiday celebration and say Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. I hope that you and your family will have the opportunity to sit down to a dinner/supper that is filled with everything that one could imagine. And, with that I'm also sure that everything will be devoured, the turkey, the mashed potatoes, yams, the table that the food was placed on, the dishes, and virtually everything that could be consumed. This is the day to eat everything. Diets? Those were just a thought in passing. Football will definitely be watched and hopefully your team will win.

With all seriousness, in this season of "Thanks" please take a moment or two and remember what America's Thanksgiving is truly all about, giving "Thanks" for everything that we have. Yes, things could always be better, but remember this, they could easily be a lot worse too. As Americans we ARE blessed to be able to have the freedoms that we have.

Oh, don't forget to give a special thanks to those who are serving in uniform, and not just the soldiers in the fields around the world, but also those who are here at home that are protecting us (police / fire) as well.

Tom Delany, W8WTD was elected Vice Director for the Great Lakes Division..

Hi Gang,

Great News..  Tom Delaney, W8WTD, has won the election for the Vice Director of the Great Lakes Division.  As most of you know, Tom was appointed as Vice Director earlier this year to succeed and complete the term of the former Vice Director, Dale Williams, WA8EFK. Dale moved into the Director’s chair after Jim Weaver, K8JE, resigned from the Board. 

Dale was the only candidate running for Great Lakes Division Director and was declared elected several months ago.

Congrats from the entire Ohio Section Tom.

Wow.. What a great weekend this is going to be..

Hi Gang,

 

First let me say “Happy Hallows Eve” to all of you!!  If your area has “Trick or Treat” tonight, or over this weekend please drive very carefully. Kids get excited about the candy and such and sometimes they just don’t think about traffic and the consequences that come with tangling with a vehicle.. Watch carefully for them.

 

Secondly.. Saturday night you’ll need to set your clocks back by 1 hour. If you don’t you’ll definitely be early to whatever you’re going to Sunday morning. Look at changing the time as a positive.. you get to sleep one hour more on Sunday..  Whoooooopie..

 

Finally.. Don’t forget that we have two hamfests this weekend. They are at opposite ends of the state, so everyone in Ohio will have an opportunity to get in a hamfest this weekend. See the Ohio Section Website http://arrlohio.org for the details..

I want to introduce you to Stan Broadway, N8BHL. Stan has an extensive background in Emergency Services and ARES. He is currently also the Emergency Coordinator for Delaware County.

We have a NEW Great Lakes Director and Vice Director..

Hi Gang,

In a release just sent out, ARRL Great Lakes Division Director Jim Weaver, K8JE, has announced his retirement from the ARRL Board of Directors, effective at noon EDT on July 7. Great Lakes Division Vice Director Dale Williams, WA8EFK, of Dundee, Michigan, is the Division’s new Director. The Great Lakes Division is made up of three states - Ohio, Michigan, and Kentucky.

ARRL President Kay Craigie, N3KN, has appointed W. Thomas “Tom” Delaney, W8WTD, of Cincinnati, Ohio, to fill the resulting Vice Director vacancy. Both Williams and Delaney will attend the ARRL National Centennial Convention and the July ARRL Board of Directors’ meeting following the convention in Hartford, Connecticut.

Jim, K8JE, has served as the League’s Great Lakes Division Director since January 2003. He was a member of the Programs & Services and CEO Candidate Screening committees. He continues to hold several Field Organization appointments in Ohio, including Official Observer and Public Information Officer.

Dale, WA8EFK has been our Great Lakes Division Vice Director since January 2012. He previously served as ARRL Michigan Section Manager — from 1992 until 1997, and from 2003 until 2011.

Tom Delaney, W8WTD our new Vice Director, has served as a Public Information Officer for about a decade. He is active on the Queen City Emergency Net and belongs to several clubs in Cincinnati. He is active in public service work, Tom, W8WTD is also the volunteer chairman of the Communications Committee for Disaster Services at the Cincinnati Area Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Jim, K8JE - you've done a very fine job over the many years that you were our Director, and we do thank you ever so much for everything that you've done for the Great Lakes Division and the Ohio Section.

Stuff.. It's now July 1st..

Hi Gang,

Wow.. It’s July 1st already.

Field Day 2014 is now something for the history books. I visited 23 different sites and put over 700 miles on the car this past weekend. It was a lot of fun, but I’m exhausted. I was fed at every location and I’m sure I've put over 10 pounds back on. My diet went out the window with this event. But I have to say, Ohio has the best cooks, hands down. Next year I’m going to post a sign on my back that states..  “Please, Do Not Feed the Section Manager..”  by orders from his wife. 

I wasn't the only Cabinet member out there either. A number of other Cabinet members were out and about as well. Overall I would say that between all of the Cabinet members we put more than 2,000 miles on our vehicles to visit with all of you. I've heard from them all and they've reported that they were also fed very well. Trust me when I say this, the Ohio Section can’t be beat for their hospitality and great food.  Pictures from Field Day are posted on the Ohio Section website. Here’s the link:

The calendar says it’s almost the 4th of July..  Now I have to tell ya’ while out on my motorcycle rides around the countryside, I am seeing the corn at “knee high” already, and that’s good – “knee high by the Fourth of July..”  The farmers had a hard time getting into the fields in the early spring, but it looks like things are still on time and all of us will be enjoying sweat corn on the cob in a few weeks.  “hot dog..”

With this time of year there it also brings out those crazy folks who want to spend a lot of hard earned money on the pyrotechnics. Be careful!! Remember only YOU can prevent my house from being burnt to the ground. Last year I didn't have to visit any of the commercially produced fireworks displays as that my neighbors put on a show that lasted well into the middle of the night. Unfortunately, in the morning I had to clean up all the debris from that fantastic show. Stuff was everywhere. It was quite a mess. Luckily nothing got destroyed, but I did have several bushes with burnt areas on them. Oh well..

With all the celebrating that Americans do to show our hard earned freedoms, please, I can’t stress this enough..   “Let’s be careful out there..”  and remember, freedom isn't free, it comes with a price. Honor the veterans, keep the faith and most of all..  HAVE FUN..
