Let's Talk.. Field Day!!

Hey Gang,

Just wanted to pop into your email boxes for a quick minute to keep you updated on things happening in the Ohio Section..

Summer is now officially here!!  Yes, and it’s also officially FIELD DAY!!

I’ve placed a “Field Day Locator” link on the left side of the Ohio Section website so that you can easily plug-in where you would like to go play Field Day at. For those of you organizing your Field Day event, please register your Field Day so that you can be easily found among all the rest.. It’s easy, just click on the Field Day Locator link. There’s a link located on the right side of the page that will allow you to register your Field Day.. The Section Cabinet will be out and about, like it was last year. I will be traveling around trying to hit as many of the Field Day Sites as I can, and that’s another good reason to make sure that your Field Day Site is registered in the Locator.. You don’t want me wandering all around the country-side looking for your site, do you??

Now, with that I also have several other links of interest.. One of them goes to a copy of the State of Ohio Proclamation for this weekend and there’s also a link to a proposed Media Release about Field Day. Make sure that you print off a copy of the Proclamation and have it on display at your site.. It’s very impressive to show off to anyone visiting your site.
Go to:  http://arrl-ohio.org/SGL/sgl.html  for both of these..

Did you know that the Ohio Section is on Facebook.. We are, you can locate us at #ARRL Ohio Section or #Ohio Section. Also.. Just recently the Ohio Section joined 100 million plus of you on Twitter. Our “handle” on Twitter is: @arrlohio   Come join us there as well.. You’ll find that all of these sites are now updated regularly..

As you know, June 1st is officially the start to Hurricane season. Now I realize that we live in more of the central part of the country, pretty much immune to such events, but it is the peak season for

tornadoes around here. And, YES, we’ve had our fair share of those around here! Are you prepared if a tornado comes? Do you have a “Go Box” ?  Do you have a your hand-held all charged up? These are things to think about now, now during the event. It’s too late then. Have you checked your generator? Do you have fuel for it? Now about this time I’m sure you’re saying “what’s he leading up to..”  Be prepared...  Events like these can spring up very suddenly and you may not have the time to charge up those toys before things really get to blowing around.

From our HF Digital guys..

OHDEN SCHEDULE
OHDEN net will be active this year to handle traffic from Field Day participants going to Ohio section SM and/or SEC.

The on the air schedule will depend on how many NCS are available. Generally the net will operate between 1400-2200 Saturday and resume 1000-1400 Sunday. The NCS will listen at the top of the hour for 15 min and handle any traffic listed. A NCS schedule will be posted on OHDEN website, email and yahoo group.

Frequencies will be the net regular frequencies as listed on the web site.
* Saturday 1400-2000, 40 meters 7072kHz USB +/- QRM
* Saturday 2000-2200, 80 meters 3885 kHz USB +/- QRM
* Sunday 1000-1400, 40 meters 7072kHz USB +/- QRM

Stations with traffic should be ready to listen to the opposite band as a backup in case of loss of communications on the hourly primary band.

* Same above schedule-60 meters is planned to be active among select stations. This band has an advantage of excellent in state coverage and it is the only HF band where voice and data can be on the same frequency. OHDEN will operate on Channel 1 5332kHz USB waterfall 1.5kHz

See the following for 60meter guideline. OLIVIA and PSK will be used on 60 meters. http://www.arrl.org/60m-channel-allocation

Digital modes will be OLIVIA 8-500 primary. The NCS will be alert to copy other popular modes such as PSK, and MT63. FLDIGI will be the software of choice.

If you’re not one of the digital folks, I do encourage you to still get involved with one of the statewide nets (Buckeye (early); Buckeye (late); Ohio Slow Net; Ohio Single Side-Band Net). You can find the times and frequencies of these nets by following this link:
http://arrl-ohio.org/stm/stm.html  I also encourage you to check-in to any of your local nets as well.

Did you see that the Ohio Section got another article published in the ARRL Newsletter? We did, it’s
http://www.arrl.org/news/view/ohio-ares-nvis-antenna-day-concludes-that-the-truth-is-up-there   all about our April NVIS Day, and here’s a link to the article..
Of course you can also see this on the Ohio Section website as well.. I want to take just a moment to thank not only Stan, N8BHL but also Tim Price, K8WFL for pushing this along.

Lastly.. Get your pencils or pens out and mark your calendars for August 1st at the Aladdin Shrine Hall for the Great Lakes Division Convention and Columbus Hamfest. There will be a number of great forums and this year, the winner of the Ohio Section Newsletter Contest won’t be announced until just before the announcement of the winner of the Great Lakes Division Newsletter Contest. The judges of both contests are all lined up and ready to go. The scheduling is tight, but I have been told that they are all up for this, so there’s just a few weeks left to get your newsletters in before the judging begins! Don’t be left out.

Now I haven’t mentioned it before, but did you know that there are Division Awards? There are and if you know someone that might qualify for one or more of these awards please, get your nomination in now. Go to:  http://arrl-greatlakes.org/awards_criteria.html
for the details.

Also.. A Wouff Hong has been scheduled as well. This special ceremony hasn't been performed for
quite some time around here. It will be a real treat for everyone attending. There is one stipulation however.. you MUST be an ARRL member to participate. Now this is the perfect opportunity for those who aren't members to become one. There is an on-line registration for this event. Please take the few minutes that it will take to complete the registration so that we have your certificate all ready for you when the ceremony is completed.. Go to:  http://arrl-greatlakes.org/wh_form.html

That’s going to do it from here.

A Special Message from the ARRL President..

Hi Gang,

I just received this special message from Kay, it's concerning HR-1301.. The legislation about CC&R's..

At the time I'm writing this, H.R. 1301 has 64 co-sponsors, with a few more expected by the end of the week. That's excellent, but we need more. A lot more.

Some of you have done e-mail bulletins encouraging members to meet with and write to their members of Congress. Thank you! Please repeat the message periodically. Although we don't want to spam members and irritate them, keeping the issue fresh in their minds is necessary. The ARRL's national media do stories about the bill, but the message needs reinforcement from someone whom members know personally. They know you.

Please mention the bill when you speak at conventions and club meetings, too. Do you carry information about the bill when you visit these events?

We have been told quite bluntly by some Congressional offices that they want letters from constituents, that they will be interested in what the ARRL has to say only if they know that voters care about this issue. Why should the Congressman care, they ask, if the voters don't? There are tens of thousands of ARRL members who have not written yet. You can do a lot to persuade them to write, because they know you.

The ideal way for members to contact their Congressmen is to write personalized, signed paper letters based on the sample letter on the ARRL web site at www.arrl.org/hr-1301 and send them c/o ARRL. The address is

ARRL
Attn HR 1301 grassroots campaign
225 Main St
Newington CT 06111

Why is this the best way? For one thing, we able to keep track of how many communications are going to which Congressional districts. More importantly, when letters are hand-delivered to the Hill, there's an opportunity to speak with Congressional office staff people. The stack of letters is proof that voters care about the bill. We have to convince the staff people, so they'll advise the Representative to co-sponsor. That's how it works on Capitol Hill.

One more thing. When you see that a member of Congress in your Section has become a co-sponsor, urge your members to call or e-mail a message of appreciation. Good manners, good strategy.

The list of co-sponsors is updated regularly at www.arrl.org/hr-1301  This is the URL that gives members the information they need in order to be effective advocates.

We are working on having a companion bill introduced in the Senate, but there is nothing to report on that yet. Members often ask about this. Until we have a bill in the Senate, we do not need letters to members of that body.

I have a Twitter feed, @KayCraigieN3KN, which I use only for advocacy about this legislation with the hashtag #hr1301. I'm not doing this as an ego trip to develop a personal fan club but rather to get information, encouragement, and reminders out there rapidly. When there is an amateur radio news story that I can reasonably tie to the issue of antenna privileges, I tweet about it and use the phrase "Can't do it without antennas."

Please keep your Director well informed about your activities on behalf of the bill. This is a full-team effort.

Thanks for all you do.

73, Kay N3KN
President, ARRL

June is here!!

Hi Gang,
Just wanted to jump into your email boxes for a quick minute to keep you updated on things happening in the Ohio Section..

Summer is here!!  Yes, meteorologically it’s summer..  Well, at least that is what a certain weather guy is saying on the evening news anyway. Personally, with the temperature at just 50 degrees.. I’d say we have a little longer to wait before we can say summer is here.

All kidding aside, June 1st is officially the start to Hurricane season. Now I realize that we live in more of the central part of the country, pretty much immune to such events, but it is the peak season for tornadoes around here. Now about this time I’m sure you’re saying “what’s he leading up to..”  Well, here it is.. FIELD DAY.. You know that event we have every year on the 4th weekend of June where you go and stuff your face with absolutely great food and fellowship and yes, competition.
